The equipment and accessories I currently use for astrophotography and visual observation from my backyard.
The core equipment used to capture deep-sky, solar system, and widefield astrophotography.
My only camera and the one I use for everything: deep-sky, widefield, lunar, solar, and everyday photography. It may be an entry-level DSLR, but it has captured many of my favourite astrophotography images and continues to surprise me with what it can do.
My favourite lens for astrophotography and the one responsible for some of my best images, including my Orion Molecular Cloud Complex photo. It's affordable, lightweight, and perfect for large nebulae, constellations, and widefield night sky scenes.
An entry-level zoom lens that I use when I want tighter framing than the 35mm can provide. It gathers less light and needs to be stopped down for the sharpest stars, but it has allowed me to capture many targets that would otherwise appear too small.
The piece of equipment that completely changed my astrophotography journey. Before getting it, I was limited to exposures of just a few seconds. With tracking, I was suddenly able to shoot exposures up to two minutes and reveal much more detail in deep-sky objects. I even replaced the original altitude handle with a sturdier aftermarket version.
My first proper tripod. Before this, I was using a DIY setup built from an old house fan. I still add extra weight to improve stability during imaging sessions, and it has served me well for countless nights under the stars.
Accessories that make astrophotography sessions easier and more reliable.
A small accessory that quickly became essential. Several imaging sessions were ruined by dew and lens fogging before I bought one. Now it goes with me every time I image.
Surprisingly useful for astrophotography. I mainly use it when focusing my Nikon lenses, where even tiny focus adjustments can make a noticeable difference in star sharpness.
Mostly used for taking flat frames using my computer monitor as a light source. It's a simple accessory, but one that sees regular use in my calibration workflow.
An essential part of my setup. Since the Nikon D3400 doesn't have a dedicated intervalometer port, I use DigiCamControl on my laptop to automate imaging sessions and capture exposures longer than 30 seconds.
A red-light headlamp is one of those accessories you don't appreciate until you spend a night outside without one. It's essential for both astrophotography and visual observing while preserving night vision.
The equipment I use for visual astronomy and occasional imaging.
My first telescope and one of my favourite pieces of equipment. The night it arrived was the first time I saw Saturn and its rings with my own eyes, and that experience is what truly hooked me on astronomy. Large enough to show impressive detail, yet still light enough to carry outside in a few minutes.
Used for safe solar observation and photography. It allows me to observe sunspots and other solar features while protecting both my eyesight and equipment.
Used during visual observing to improve contrast on selected emission nebulae. It helps certain deep-sky objects stand out more clearly against the background sky.
Allows me to attach my Nikon DSLR directly to the Dobsonian telescope for lunar, planetary, and solar photography.
A basic Plössl eyepiece included with the telescope. It's my usual starting point for wide-field views and finding objects in the sky.
Another stock Plössl eyepiece that came with the Dobsonian. It provides higher magnification and is commonly used for observing the Moon and planets.
